When we listen to or watch the News, we might get the impression that the world is growing worse every day. We are faced with crisis here, wars there, and political decisions that make us question reality. It makes sense for news agencies. We are hardwired for negativity. From an evolutionary point this is important. But this, mainly one-sided, news coverage is also detrimental for the hope and the optimism in our lives.
When we listen to all the negative news and events it decreases our own motivation to do something and also decreases our hope that positive things can bring change.
“Your beliefs become your thoughts,
Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions,
Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values,
Your values become your destiny.”
– Mahatma Gandhi
So, what we believe matters. A lot. And often we believe what we are told. That is why it is fundamental that we have a balanced diet of what we read and watch. That is why we should look for positive news. It gives us hope, motivates us and brings us closer together. So, when you watch or the news or read a depressing article, try to find something that gives you hope. And to make your search even a bit easier, I looked up three of those websites:
This page looks very nice and has articles on a variety of topics. Those include society, economics, science, environment, lifestyle, and perspective. They report on the EU-wide ban of pesticides to save the bees, highly skilled refugees, or three projects that turn waste into something useful. This page is a lovely start to infuse our lives with some much-needed positivity.
This page can be a good addition to the former one. It has articles about business, sports, animals, and many more inspiring stories. They write about a mom who developed an app for deaf parents to be alarmed when the baby is crying. Another story is about a brewery which had problems and a competitor stepped in to help them. Those are stories from individuals who help to see the good in people. It helps us unite again and not growing further apart.
This is a German page. Why did I include it here? Because I think there might be a page in your country, too. At least it is worth looking to find regional positive news. If not, how about collecting and spreading positive news on your social media page? Or, even better, create positive news yourself =).
It is not about shielding us from everything that is negative. It is still good to stay informed and sometimes even necessary to stay alive. I just want to invite us to try out a more balanced news-diet. It doesn’t harm if it is a bit more optimistic though =).
