In the entry about this month’s YouTube Channel of the Month I wrote about the School of Life and the different views it provides on a variety of topics. This article is about their most recent video which is a funny, but insightful view on getting married.
Normally, wedding vows include lines such as “you make me complete”, “you are perfect”, “I will always be there for you”, or “I will always try to make you happy”. Of course, another part is to remain together “in good as well as in bad times”, but a wedding ceremony does not really address the bad time part.
I mean it is understandable. It is one of the biggest days in our lives. We marry the person we love so much that we want to spend the rest of our lives with. It is an emotional day full of love, and gratitude. But does it have to mean that there cannot be room for some realistic honesty?
I know that I am not perfect at all. Sometimes far away actually. I have my problems which I carry around with me and this will at times negatively impact my partner. I have flaws, and I am, though I reflect a lot, still an amateur in voicing my needs and feelings. I have my clear opinions on a lot of topics and matters that will definitely create conflict with my significant other.
And I know that the woman I marry will have her issues, too. By voicing my own shortcomings, I can already create a mutual understanding. Firstly, because she knows my flaws and what to expect, which might help her to cope with me during those moments. And secondly, because it helps me be understanding for her own flaws as well. When I think about it, I believe that this is maybe even more romantic than only saying nice words to each other.
A marriage is a long and difficult road. A beautiful one as well, but it is easier to deal with the beauty and all the nice moments than we are prepared to deal with the difficult ones. The video is a lovely and funny example of how a wedding ceremony could look like adjusting the vows to become a more insightful and vulnerable way to demonstrate love to each other.
Have a wonderful day and take care!
